The Benromach story.
The truth of the matter is that Benromach expresses the original, classic character of Speyside: its beautifully balanced character exudes a luscious, light touch of smoke.
Before the mid 1960s, all the distilleries in Speyside dried and malted their own barley.
Hidden away in remote glens, the distilleries topped up their coal fires with cuts of local peat. It was enough to impart a touch of smoke to the region’s whisky.
When modern commercial maltings arrived in the swinging sixties, this subtle Speyside smokiness was lost to the world.
Three decades later in 1993, our whisky-loving family purchased Benromach Distillery – the fulfilment of a four-generation long ambition to make our own whisky. Over the past century our family, the Urquharts of Gordon & MacPhail, have amassed an astonishing collection of beautiful aged single malt whiskies. It’s Scotland’s liquid history. And it’s kept safely under lock and key in our bonded warehouses in Elgin. We think the old Speysiders from before the 1960s are, frankly, wonderful. So as passionate custodians of this rare character, we felt honour-bound to give the world back this very special style of malt.
Our distillery has been making Benromach since1898 using the same spring water rising in the nearby Romach Hills. Come and see our distillers at work as they orchestrate every second of the production by sight, sound and touch. One of our friendly tour guides will proudly show you around our boby mill, mash tun, wooden washbacks, copper stills, spirit safe and our warehouses. And, of course, in our visitor centre enjoy a tutored tasting of our gorgeous classic Speyside Single Malt Whisky.
How to find us from A to B
We’re tucked away at the top of Speyside, beside the coast. There aren’t many roads up here so it’s easy to find your way through the Highlands. Head for Forres Railway Junction: and follow the "Benromach" sign posted road over the railway and turn right at the junction.
